Old Big Mansion Kinarut

We did not find any landmark of this nature which looks like a fort and which could have been used as a fort by the early British settlers who had been trying to fight the pirates and the rebellion at Marudu led by Shariff Rom Osman. Could this had been a garrison as it was told by the Village Head of Kg Sharif Osman, En Enjin that the British armada led by Brooke bombarded Marudu from Mantanani Island, an island off Kota Belud.Muzium Sabah had two cannons found at Marudu in their safe keeping.

Fort Margareta in Kuching would have been to far away to provide the necessary logistics and support for the British armada and a place closer to Marudu, like the Old Big Mansion at Kinarut would be the most appropriate location, more so as it provided a good view of the seas as well as the deep and wide river for boats and even ships to come in and took shelter. More research had to be done on this place and there are not other ports that we can find in Sabah except for this site and that of Tenom which was formerly known as Port Birch (could be Fort Birch) as port was not normally built in the river banks but the sea.

This old Big Mansion at Kinarut Papar is now called the Panorama View Muzium by its owner the Sabah Muzium. It was said to have been built by some foreigners but did not mention who they were. What I gather was that this place had been used as a prison.

The Story Of Mandau, Bandau,Marudu

MANY VERSION ABOUT THE MEANING OF MANDAU

The local communities including the Dusun’s version about Mandau is that it is a kind of ‘creature’ that was alike a buffalow but could change appearance into another form or another kind and they make some noise everytime there were some happening like fighting or war. This could imply to mean people who were very fierce and shout the battlecry everytime they go to war.

THE STORY OF BANDAU

Bandau, a town in Marudu Laut also comes from the word ‘Mandau’. It is possible that Mandau also comes from the word ‘Mundu’,which is the word for pirates. Bandau is about 30 minutes upriver from Kg Marudu Laut by boat, but you may now reach this place on your way to Kudat.

THE STORY OF MARUDU

Marudu is said to have come from the word Mandau. History told us that Marudu’s history is about piracy and the encounter with Rajah Brooke that had resulted in the handing over of Sarawak by the Sultan Of Brunei after Rajah Brooke succeeded in subduing the pirates. At that time it was the British who was in the power.

It was also told by the Ketua Kampong of Kg Shariff Osman that the Bajau in Darau also had come from Marudu and that the Bajau Laut in Kg Marudu Laut had fled Pulau Jambongan in the East Coast to settle down in Kg Marudu Laut. They could have come in support of the local cause (Shariff Osman)

MANDAU IN MENGGATAL

Mandau is also the mountain in Menggatal that is not very far away from Kg Darau, Menggatal where the Dusun settled down as they moved inland from their ricefield at Darau upon the arrival of the Bajau Darau into their area.

The Tomb Of Sharif Osman At A Forest Reserve

The Tomb Of Sharif Osman Need Conservation
In the forest reserve of Kudat and Kota Marudu lies the tomb of Sharif Osman as well as the other people who had died fighting including the British soldiers. According to the Ketua Kampong of Kg Sharif Osman in Kota Marudu, En Injin, it was not Sharif Osman because Sharif Osman had passed away. It was his son name, Sharif Rom. It started with a misunderstanding with Rajah Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak over that of Sharif Rom's wife who is the daughter of the Sultan of Sulu. The British had wanted to take the picture of Sharif Rom's wife who was claimed to have some extraordinary appearance in that when she ate anything you could see the color of the food in her throat. However Sharif Rom disagreed and had only agreed to take the picture of the palm of his hand. So the misunderstanding started and Rajah Brook told Sharif Rom to prepare for a battle and make himself a fort or a stronghold at Marudu. The British Armada fired from Pulau Mantanani, an island off Kota Belud, southwest of Kudat. Sharif Rom was said to be very fierce and cruel and he had instructed his men to hang the testicles of the British soldiers who had died. In the cementry at the forest reserve lies Sharif Rom and his followers as well as the British soldiers who had died. Rajah Brook was called by the Sultan of Brunei to engage with the rebellion from Sharif Dom. Rajah Brook was given the piece of land now called Sarawak for his success in defeating Sharif Dom and his men. So starts the White Rajah dynasty in Sarawak. The Ketua Kampong of Kg Sharif Osman said that they were under the Sultanate of Brunei before the Independence. The Sulu Sultanate came through the marriage of the daughter to Sharif Rom. The tomb and cemetary is not well looked after despite the visits by tourists to the area. You will miss the are if that was your first visit. The place must be preserved for the future generation to inherit as it is part of the history for Sabah. The Sabah Muzium and Historical Department of UMS had visited the area but not much had been done as was seen through the lack of sign-board and information and road signs. Even the road entrance did not mention the Tomb of Sharif Osman but called Jalan Ranau.

Why We Call Them Bajau Laut

Many parties had come to Kg Marudu Laut, but the living standard and livelihood of these Bajau Laut community did not change much since the nation achieved independence. They could have chosen to live as they are as their fore-fathers. The Forest Officer of the Kudat and Kota Marudu Foreserve Reserve area had called them to work with the Forestry Department but these Bajau Laut community preferred to live the lives of fishermen and activiities related to the river and the sea. They are the Sea Gypsies. They are nice people to talk to and replied to many questions that you had posted to them. Their village is about 30 miutes by boat to Langkon and 10 minutes to the open sea.

Bajau Laut At Kg Marudu Laut

As you head to Kota Marudu township you will see a road called Jalan Ranau, before you reach the steel bridge. You go right up to the end of the road and you will reach a river called Langkon River. Here lives some of the Bajau Laut people, about 100 of them. Their livelihood is fishing, making the roof from the Nipah leaves and they sell fish including dried fish. They still live in houses made from these roof including the walls of the houses. They have piped water but they still use the kerosene pump lamp as there is no electricity connection. Their land is actually within the Kudat and Kota Marudu forest reserve. Kg Marudu Laut could be the oldest village in Sabah as it is written in history about Rajah Brooke and the rebellion headed by Sharif Osman in Marudu. It was written in history that Rajah Brooke was given the land which is now called Sarawak after they had helped the Sultan Of Brunei brought down a rebellion headed by Sharif Osman. These group of Bajau Laut was said to have fled from Sabah East coast, a place called Jambongan, an island off Sandakan.
